There are lots of reasons why you might need to buy an AED:
Your workplace requires one
You operate or manage a recreation/sports centre, school or medical practice
You have a family member with a cardiac condition
We would be happy to help you decide if you need an AED. It is not recommended that families have AEDs without a medical condition requiring one. The AED is an expensive investment and requires regular reviews and the replacement of batteries and electrodes/pads.
If you do need to buy an AED in the Cayman Islands, you could purchase and ship one from the USA or they can be purchased from the Cayman Heart Fund (CHF). For every nine AEDs that the CHF sells, they donate the tenth one to somewhere in need.
Replacement batteries and pads/electrodes are critical to the life-saving powers of an AED. If the battery is out of date it may not deliver the shock needed to save a life or if the pads/electrodes are no longer adhesive because they have past their expiration date, they will not stick to the patient and carry out the necessary analysis to determine whether a shock is required.
It is important to have AEDs checked regularly – this is why LifeLine will send reminder emails to all the AEDs registered on the LifeLine database.
